I’m always amused at the attempt that some people make to classify celebrities as political conservatives, as if one’s political beliefs ought to be determined by people who are famous either for creating an alternative reality (actors), crafting a tune, or who are famous simply for being famous (the Kardashian sisters, whoever they are).
Still, I took the bait and looked through the musicians on the list that Manny Lopez linked to. Is it true that Republicans are doomed to have their partisan playlist limited to one Lee (God Bless the USA) Greenwood? Or even country singers?
So I decided in my own subjective way to classify the musicians on the list according to genre. Here’s what I found:
Country/pop (8): Naomi Judd; Sara Evans; LeeAnn Womack; Marie Osmand; Trace Adkins; Martina McBride; Loretta Lynn [is she still recording?]; LeeAnn Rimes.
Rock/pop (9): Johnny Ramone; Nick Lachey; Gloria Estefan; Kid Rock; Meatloaf; Ted Nugent; Alice Cooper; Shirley Jones (aka Mrs. Shirley Partridge); Sammy Hagar.
Classical (1): Ronan Tynan
Lounge lizards (1): Wayne Newton
Rap (2): LLCoolJ; 50 Cent
Admittedly, you can quibble with my classifications. Shirley Jones is more of an actress (Oklahoma!, Elmer Gantry, etc.) than a musician, but I put her in this group because she did sing her own vocals on “The Partridge Family.” Still, the list is more balanced between country/pop and rock/pop than I would have predicted.
